1997. Programmers at Humongous Entertainment made the character diminutive in comparison to the other characters, but loaded his skill ratings. The hint that Sanchez was one of the best players in the game showed up in his bio, where he was nicknamed "Secret Weapon".
Started as a point-and-click take on baseball with a memorable cast of kid based characters and was famously part of a giveaway promotion with cereal purchases. The group ran the gamut of genders and ethnicities, making it incredibly inclusive for a game made in thelate 90s. Each player had differing skill ratings, backgrounds and overall personalities.
The most memorable is Pablo Sanchez, who supposedly only spoke Spanish. However, there was a key sequence that unlocked an Easter egg where Sanchez revealed he actually spoke English and only learned Spanish in school. Sanchez's overall aesthetic didn't change much in future versions of the game. The sprite based animation from 1997 evolved to a 3D model on home consoles like PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube.

, turns out it's rather sophisticated for a kid's take on sport. The pitching and batting mechanic features target zones within an outlined strike zone tailored to each character. Gamers could hit for power, contact or bunt. Pitching featured fast balls, curves, change-ups, knuckle balls, and more. Throughout the game, players can choose power ups such as a "frozen pitch" or "crazy bunt".
Players would create their teams from the pool of kids. Some characters, like Sanchez, could do it all. Others leaned heavily on a single attribute, like being a power hitter or a good pitcher. For instance, Keisha Phillips could crush home runs.
Eventually licensed real-life baseball players to mix in with the original characters. The Nintendo GameCube version of the game, released in 2003, has an impressive roster of players who wound up associated with the steroids era because time is a funny thing sometimes. Just look at Alex Rodriguez in his Texas Rangers uniform on the cover.
